Principal’s Message

Dear Parents

It was great to see so many parents, teachers and families attend the Lantern Festival last Friday night.  My apologies if I did not get a chance to talk to you during the night but I was never going to be able to talk to everyone as we had over 700 people attend.   I would like to take this opportunity to thank the PTA team and all the parent volunteers for their work on the night.  In particular I would like to acknowledge the work of Ildi and Joyce, who are both PTA members, for coordinating the event.

Robert Guy Ramsey and family donated all the meat on the night which was very kind of them as well (plus it was very nice)!  Like in previous years, all of the left over food was donated to one of the homeless shelters in Hong Kong that night meaning others got to enjoy the meat as well.

In the weeks to come I will also acknowledge those parents that have made generous donations to the school in recent months.  These donations have supported us in our efforts to ensure our school is very well resourced.

Thank you for your continued support these past 2 months.  It has been a busy but very productive half term for the children and staff.  The Year 4-6 children, shortly after the mid term break, get to enjoy their annual camps and as in previous years the build up to Christmas promises to be both challenging and an exciting time for everyone.

Kind regards,
Bill Garnett
Principal

Now that we are approaching the middle of the first term, our students have become more familiar with their new classmates and teachers as well their new rooms.  They have grown in confidence over the past weeks and have shown this to us in different ways.  The Y1s are now moving around the school confidently, they know where to go and they wave hello to familiar people in school.  In the Y2 to Y6 classes, we see children confidently sharing their ideas and skills in different ways – through circle time, small group tasks, individual projects and class displays.  At the end of their first units of inquiry, children had various opportunities to share their understandings through presentations, projects and performances.  They shared their learning with their peers with confidence.  The Y6s celebrated the Day of the Notables last week.  We were impressed by the knowledge, creativity and confidence each of them displayed.

Creativity is a focus in our current units of inquiry in Y1, Y2, Y4 and Y5. These four year groups are now inquiring into ‘How we express ourselves’ with each year level exploring the concept of creativity.  Last week, Y1 and Y2 went on a field trip to the theatre to watch ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’.  In Y1, they followed this up by discussing the different ways we experience and enjoy art.  In Y2, they talked about how people express their thoughts, feelings and ideas through stories.  The Y4 classes have just begun inquiring into what inspires us to create and the role of our personal experiences and imagination in the creative process.  The Y5 classes are studying messages and how they are created and shared.  They are learning to analyse and critique messages and what makes them effective.  To learn more about how creativity is valued and addressed through the Primary Years Programme, check out this article by click HERE.

Chinese News

A call for parent volunteers: Non-Chinese speakers welcome!

We are looking for parent volunteers who can help us supervise the children when they are working on small group tasks.  You don’t need to be a Chinese speaker but you do need to be eager to support the children in managing their time and staying on task!  You can volunteer to work with any year group — not just your own child’s.  You may be supervising them as they read their Chinese stories online, as they practice their writing on the iPads, or when they play language games.  You might even learn some Chinese words and phrases along the way.  We look forward to having you with us!

The sign up form for October 18th to the 29th can be viewed by clicking HERE.

We will send the sign up sheet for the subsequent weeks when we get back to school after the break.

Lion Dance after school club

In Peak School’s most recent Chinese New Year celebrations, we invited professional Lion Dancers to perform for the students.  This year, we have invited the coaches of the very same team to train ten Y4 to Y6 children after school.  The fee for the lessons will be $70 per one hour session x 12 sessions = $840 / child.  Practices will begin on the week of 14 November to 16 January, once or twice the week.

If your child is interested in being part of this after school club, kindly complete this form by clicking HERE with him / her.

Chinese parent workshop

Peak Sends Three Teams to the ESF Services Football Tournament

This year Peak School sent its largest contingent of footballers to the annual ESF Services Football Tournament at KGV. The tournament hosted 19 boys teams and 10 girls teams from schools all across Hong Kong.

The Girls team played some tough games against Clearwater Bay, Quarry Bay, Shatin and Discovery College. With each game, they played better positional football and demonstrated some sound defense. They are now preparing for their next tournament which is the’ Peak School Girls Invitational’ on October 29.

The Boys entered two teams with each demonstrated excellent football skills, communication and teamwork. Both teams progressed from their pools to the plate quarter finals.  Our second team lost narrowly to Quarry Bay while our first team won their quarter finals game, and their semifinals game to set up a final against Bradbury. Both teams played well with each team creating chances to score. In the end however Bradbury won 2-0.

Green Group

ESF Environment Conference

greengroup_04

Nine members of Peak School’s Green Group participated in the ESF Environmental Conference on Friday 30th December. Held at Discovery College, the Conference was designed to take place almost entirely outside. Each of our students had the chance to participate in 4 different workshops on a diverse range of subjects which included; exploring Hong Kong’s wild foods, creating music from nature, designing effective water filters, yoga in nature, plant and bug explorations and measuring and maths in the outdoors.

greengroup_02The day was a wonderful learning experience and we will be aiming to incorporate some of the ideas from the workshops into our use of outdoor space here at Peak School.

Recycling at Lantern Festival

As part of our goal to reduce Peak School’s waste, we set up two recycling and composting stations at the Lantern Festival Event. The Green Group helped to design posters for each bin so that it was easy to identify what should be put into each bin.

At the event, we collected a large number of aluminium cans and plastic cups for recycling and the left over food waste is now being composted in our compost bins. Parent volunteers at the drinks stand also helped out by collecting up glass bottles and these have also now gone to be recycled. This is a great start to making our events waste free, thank you to everyone who helped out.
